Our very own Gene Cockeram shows you how to pick rhododendrons and azaleas for a flower show. Everyone should view this educational video clip before your next rhododendron flower show. Gene is unbelievable in his knowledge of picking, grooming and showing flowers. Gene and Doris’s mature garden covers about two acres and probably has over 1000 rhododendrons and azaleas. After working with Gene for over two hours, one finds that he is a walking rhododendron encyclopedia. He knows every plant in his garden and if it is a hybrid, the name of it’s parents! He even knows the history of that plant and probably where he obtained it.

Remember that this video has not been done by a professional! But you should learn a lot of great information from it. Hopefully you will all get more blue ribbons and win some trophies after viewing it!

The 27 minute video clip comes in four sizes; tiny, small, medium, and large. Depending on how fast your broadband hook-up is your computer will probably pick what size it likes best. If you have dial-up, you may want to start with tiny. It is fun to watch this video clip in large, but you may have to download the clip first to enjoy watching it without the video clip stopping and going waiting for your slow broadband to download it.

Parking area along the south bank of the Umpqua River reached by a single lane road immediately east of the garden.

...The eastern portion of the garden is a fairly easy walk from the parking area. The larger ‘island’ part of the garden is not ADA accessible, and will require walking inside the highway guardrail, negotiating concrete steps and crossing a low footbridge. While care should of course be exercised, low growing vegetation will have been cleaned up before our visits for better viewing and easier walking among the plantings.

...GENERAL: Now well over fifty years in the making, this garden is one of the oldest large rhododendron collections in Oregon. ... You will be rewarded with a mature garden at this remarkable and beautiful location against its scenic river backdrop. Restoration is well underway through major investments by the Bureau of Land Management, with advice and some physical assistance by our members, and financial support for plant replacement from the ARS Endowment Fund. Improved plant health and bloom from these efforts over the last several years is more and more evident. The BLM has kindly agreed to two visits a month apart to accommodate more visitors and, for those who can go on both dates, enjoy a greater range of plant material in flower.

...The garden is not yet open to the general public, but you may bring family members and interested friends. Good turnouts will help bolster continued progress, and you are cordially encouraged to take advantage of these special opportunities in a trip to relish both the garden and the panoply of ongoing springtime awakening along the way.

...He along with other ARS members, Gene Cockeram, Bob MacIntyre and Galen Baxter are examples, have helped BLM in identifying rhododendrons and other plants at the Hinsdale Garden.

Tulips, Tulips, Tulips!

Jo Ann and Paul went to Keukenhof in the spring of 2007. There is no place quite like it. ... We only attended one day there , but Paul could have spent three! On one of the webmaster’s other websites, here are 160 photos which Paul took. We went on a 12 day Elderhostel trip entitled “Tulipmania”. (Elderhostel is now called Exploritas) The program number is 10137RJ. If you are looking for a trip to Europe in the spring and love flowers, maybe this is the one for you. By the way, just looking at photos does not do the place justice! It’s the spells, noise, looking, people’s reactions, etc.

When Paul first started taking photos he was somewhat overwhelmed! So he started to include the name of the tulips he was taking. If you find something you like from Paul’s photos, (give photos time to load into your computer before viewing) write down the tulip name and then see if the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm has it. (see below) Might be cheaper than having the bulbs sent from the Netherlands. Heck, you might even find them in COSTCO.

But, before you do, here are some suggestions on how to get the information you are about to provide to Pat Thompson the easiest way. The easiest way and cheapest way is to email her back the information she wants. Some of you may not know how to do that.

First, print up the questions she wants on what I call “scratch paper”, printed on one side and blank on the other. (print on the blank side) Just print up the whole project. You now use these sheets to answer all her questions. When finished you have two options:

#1 - fold up everything (scratch paper), place in an envelope, put on a 44¢ stamp, and mail it to her, or

#2 - using your mouse, select all the information she is requesting (copy) and then paste that selected information that you just copied into an email to her. (Clicking on her email address should take you right to your computers email software with a blank email ready to go) Once you have pasted all the information she is requesting into the new email, just type in the information you just wrote on the scratch paper into the copied requested information. When finished, you can just email everything back to her. Heck, you can even attach any JPEG photos to the email you want.

“I have not yet had a chance to visit with you about the Hinsdale Estate nor do I know what you know about it. I was asked by Gordon Wylie and Bob McIntyre to come down and take some photos there while the flowers were in bloom. It was just after our late show and I was just about saturated with flower photos so I was reluctant to go. I was pushed into it by Judy and I am so glad that I went.

This is more that a garden. It is an experience. I had no idea of what was there. We have driven past for many years but we had no idea about the old house and garden that is hidden and hard to access. The property is now owned by the BLM and they are doing what they can to resurrect and maintain it and to provide access to the public.

Gordon Wylie has been very involved in working toward the same ends.

I have had some great response to the few folks that have seen this presentation.”

LOCATION: Approximately 5 miles east of Reedsport on Hwy. 38 opposite the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area. The garden is on the north side of the highway between the roadway and the Umpqua River.

PLEASE NOTE: Visitors should first come to the East End Ranch House at the eastern end of the elk meadows on the south side of the highway. There they will sign in to provide coverage for any injuries (unlikely, but an important caution provided courtesy of our agreement with the BLM), and carpool to the small parking area for the garden. The parking area is not large enough for buses but will accommodate vans or similar vehicles for folks traveling together.

The garden is not ADA accessible and the main part on the island requires negotiating a sloped path inside the highway guardrail and concrete block steps to a temporary footbridge. Tide levels are favorable for crossing on the scheduled date. The eastern, off island portion of the garden is more easily reached from the parking area via a generally flat dirt and gravel path. One may also see part of the main garden and house from that vantage. Because of protected animals in the area, please do not bring pets. There are no restroom facilities at the garden or ranch house, so visitors should use those available nearby at the off highway parking area for elk viewing about a mile west of the garden.

OTHER: The conditions noted above are straightforward and easily met. The Hinsdale Garden is a pleasant day trip from anywhere in Western Oregon, and this visit provides an opportunity to enjoy all the scenery of our ongoing spring awakening and the plants, trees, wildlife, ocean views and such...the good life of Oregonians. We hope many will take advantage to explore and show support for a unique garden in a beautiful setting

Early Show Data

Here are some results back from the 2009 Early Show.

Here is what they have to say about the trip…

“Arrangements have been made with Pat at Thompson’s for our visit on Tuesday, May 5. He is expecting us sometime after 10 AM. Debbie and I would like members to meet us at the Florence True Value Store parking lot on the corner of Hwy 126 and Quince Street at 9 AM and we will caravan up to Thompson’s Nursery in Waldport. After finishing with Thompson’s Nursery, we will take a tour of the beautiful Gerdemann Botanical Garden, offered by new owners Kathleen and Jerry Sand.

There should be a lot of nice plants blooming, and I’m sure it will be a fun trip.

We plan to have lunch together. The Salty Dawg Grill has been suggested for lunch. It is located at 375 Port St.... Other suggestions for lunch are welcome and will be determined by the size of our group.”

If you are interested in joining the group for this trip, just show up at the designated meeting spot and time. You can get more information about the trip and/or tentatively arrange to ride with someone else in the group. Debbie’s phone number is 997-8376. The 2009 ARS National Convention this year is being held in Everett, Washington from Wednesday, April 29 until Sunday, May 3.

A number of members from our Siuslaw Chapter will be going. If you have never attended a National Convention, you might very well enjoy one. Be sure to talk to other members at our March meeting or just ask them questions on the phone.

If you plan to attend the fantastic garden tours that are presented, then you had better sign up early! Every national convention garden tours the webmaster has attended have been outstanding. This area in Washington is a hotbed of beautiful azaleas and rhododendrons.

...In the latest issue of the ARS Journal you will find on page 28 a list of things to do in the area.

...You may want to add a week or two at the start or end of the convention. Plenty to see and do in the Seattle area. If you have never been to the San Juan Islands, take some time and visit them.

Driving time from Florence to Everett will vary between 6 to 8 hours, depending on weather and traffic. If you leave early, you should miss the fun traffic of the Seattle area.

You should use a high speed broadband Internet connection to view this video blog.

The video was taken with a Mac laptop using it’s new built in video camera. ... It works fantastic for plain old photos, but gives a mirror image when doing video. You will notice the spelling on Mike’s chapter t-shirt is not readable. When one uses a laptop out in the sunlight, you cannot see the movement of the arrow curser on the computer screen. ... We didn’t see the mirror image results until we were done. The PJM plant is really over his right shoulder, not his left. For those interested, the video was taken using the standard 4:3 ratio TV screen size. When I did some conversions using some Apple movie software, I changed the ratio from 4:3 to the new HDTV ratio of 16:9. What that really does is cuts off some of the upper and lower parts of the standard 4:3 standard TV picture.

...(31.4 MB) Do not start the movie until the loading bar gets past Mike’s face. ... In a couple of weeks, I will present this movie in the standard 3:4 ratio. You can then do a comparison as to which style you like best.

In the future I will just shoot short video blogs using my point and shoot digital camera on a tripod.

Newsletter Ad Form

Just print, fill out, and then mail or give to Marilee Mulvey this PDF form to place an ad in our monthly newsletter. Jim will provide the cuttings, four-inch pots, planting medium and other materials for his demonstration. We hope to have a great turnout for the meeting! Many of the cuttings from this demonstration will be grown for the next two years in order to sell at the conference we are hosting in 2010.

Here is what Jim needs from those of you who have any type of WARMING BED MAT systems- Jim is asking you to assist by contacting him if you will take a flat(s) of propagated cuttings to grow for sales at our Western Regional Conference in October 2010. If you have any type of warming system that would work for this project, please call Jim Smith at 541-268-6821 (this is a Mapleton phone number and is NOT a long distance call from Florence). He is awaiting your call right now! Thanks for your help, and we'll see you next week at the meeting!

2009 Chapter Flower Shows

Dates for the chapter flower shows in 2009 will be the Early Show, Saturday, April 11 and Sunday, April 12. Contact Paul "Ziggy" Ziegelmair, best by email fpziegelmair@charter.net, so he can see the correct spelling of the rhody/azalea. You can even write out the name on a piece of paper and give it to him at a chapter meeting. He will then assign a Show Key "class number".
