Starting time will be 10:00am on both dates. The garden is next to the Umpqua River about 5 miles east of Reedsport on highway 38.

May 12 will be this year’s Public open garden day, and includes a special invitation to ARS members to act as docents and ambassadors for the garden and rhododendrons—a primary goal we share. A definite plus is the opportunity to do so in a garden created during the early years of the ARS.

Visitors on the 12th will check in at the kiosk and information center for the elk viewing area west of the garden. BLM will provide shuttle service from there to and from the garden. Though the entire garden is not available to persons with disabilities, they will find much of the main garden, along with excellent perspectives of large plants in the east garden, quite visible from the driveway circling in front of the house.

Several other events clamor for gardeners’ attention on the weekend, so we have arranged time the following Wednesday especially for garden enthusiasts. This date is for ARS members, their gardening friends and members of other garden groups. Folks of limited mobility may be left off at the main entrance, and parking will be in the small lot immediately east of the garden. Car-pooling is encouraged because of limited parking space.

It simply doesn’t get any better than a coastal drive highlighting nature’s annual renewal, coupled with your destination at a mature woodland garden on the banks of the scenic Umpqua River.

Upper right hand corner lets one show Week, Month, or Agenda. (Be sure to look at Agenda) You might try to print out the calendar, but you might have problems. You may have to reduce the size (%) to get it onto 8.5 x 11 paper.

If you click on any of the monthly chapter events, it will give you more information. I don’t know how “copy to my calendar” works with Windows computer calendar software. I would stay clear of “more details”, it takes you to another page!

If one clicks on the 7 PM chapter meeting link, it shows a “map” link after the church. ... Hey, just that one feature will save me from having to provide maps on the website!

Some members might like to subscribe to the chapter calendar, so here are the links to do that.

Our very own Gene Cockeram shows you how to pick rhododendrons and azaleas for a flower show. Everyone should view this educational video clip before your next rhododendron flower show. Gene is unbelievable in his knowledge of picking, grooming and showing flowers. Gene and Doris’s mature garden covers about two acres and probably has over 1000 rhododendrons and azaleas. After working with Gene for over two hours, one finds that he is a walking rhododendron encyclopedia. He knows every plant in his garden and if it is a hybrid, the name of it’s parents! He even knows the history of that plant and probably where he obtained it.

Remember that this video has not been done by a professional! But you should learn a lot of great information from it. Hopefully you will all get more blue ribbons and win some trophies after viewing it!

The 27 minute video clip comes in four sizes; tiny, small, medium, and large. Depending on how fast your broadband hook-up is your computer will probably pick what size it likes best. If you have dial-up, you may want to start with tiny. It is fun to watch this video clip in large, but you may have to download the clip first to enjoy watching it without the video clip stopping and going waiting for your slow broadband to download it.
